Currently running Android 4.4    Am I able to continue using this box if I upgrade Kodi, or am I out of luck?  Is there any upgrade available for the ATV520E?

520E only has up to Android 4.2
So I am not sure how you are running 4.4?

Only Kodi 16.1 will work on Android 4.2

There is no upgrade for the 520e to run anything Android 4.2+
