No sound from SPDIF

This box is really shaky when it comes to reliability.  I have been able to get SPDIF sound consistently.  Box occasionally freezes and when I restart, there is a chance I do not get sound from the SPDIF ports.

Very frustrating and it almost feels like less reliable than my little Roku I had for a couple of years.  

How do I fix the sound issue?  Obviously I cannot get it to work from HDMI.

Which program are you experiencing this in? Is it one app, or several or is it the system?

 

You mention not getting it to work from hdmi, what do you mean?
