Thanks for trying folks, but it did not work for me (possibly a regional thing and our local support are useless).

USBBT burned the image, but my unit just hangs at the Lollipop screen when powered on and connected to monitor.

Leave it for good 10 minutes.

Left it for a solid 30, but it hung. Not being one to give up too easily, I successfully burned the image to the unit a 2nd time using USBbt, powered down, connected to monitor and powered it on again. This time took a few minutes, and the initial configuration functions appeared.

Successfully configured to initial settings.

So thanks to the Canadian support folk for the effort they took to assist. It is appreciated. Our local guys and the folks at HO in China could learn a thing or two.

Still annoyed that an update to 7.1 cannot be applied (as there are numerous apps that rely on 6 and above to function), but this unit will serve well as a back-up in the event the more recent competitors unit gives any hassles that I will be purchasing.

that sounds really good, now for OS 7.1, delete files you have and redownload the full file, and unzip and load the file back to SD card and try again.  Do not load to USB.

update me here, please.

Right, downloaded the 7.1 files again, reformatted the SD Card to FAT32, copied files to root and followed the update procedure as outlined to the letter. Status bar with oscillating multi-coloured rings appeared, ran through installation phase to Erase and screen went black. Unplugged HDMI and re-inserted without disconnecting power at any point and VOILA! We have 7.1 installed :-)

Thank you ever so kindly. Always a pleasure to eat humble pie when my views are changed by solid support.

Hi There,

Thanks for this fix. Just a question: to put it in Recovery mode (point 6) , does the ATV need to be plugged in to power? From the pic in step 7 it looks like it is not plugged into power?

Hey guys

So I tried to upgrade my atv495pro from 5.1 to 7.1 recently with disastrous results! My device now will not reboot! It has power put displays black screen.

I have followed the above process point to the point with no success!

Any help will be appreciated.

Despite what the instructions say, I had to use the "front" USB port closest to the SD card slot. Also, I didn't have to hold down the power button. The 495PRO was immediately recognized by USB Burning Tool when the USB was plugged in.

I thought I bricked my ATV495 . I ended up with a solid orange light. Nothing worked

Without thinking I plugged my USB adapter containing micro sd  Android 7.1 into a USB slot instead of the Micro Usb Slot.

I ended up with a solid orange light. Nothing worked

I followed all the steps above.

I had a similar experience to user QVortex , the USB port closest to the SD card slot recognized my device instantly and started initializing. (Windows 10 - 1903)

Holding the power button never worked for me.

Then the device got stuck with error [0x10303004]Romcode/Switch status/Identify/Error result - It was stuck at 4%

Did a Google search for the error.

This is too crazy..after changing temperature setting it worked for me too! Whats this?!?!?!!?

I then changed the temperature setting range on the USB Burning Tool software - View / Temperature Settings - From Range between 0 to 90

Then it worked. Burning completed successfully . I got my device back to 5.1.

The trick in getting the USB Burning Tool to pair with the box is to not plug the power adapter in at the beginning.  Just inserting the USB cable will provide power to the box to flash, once it starts flashing plug the power adapter in so it has enough constant power to complete the flash.

With some of the firmware you do not need to press the Power button while inserting the USB cable,  but pressing down on the Power button and then inserting the USB cable is good for all versions.

So this is how you should do it for the 495 series of boxes (ATV 495PRO, ATV 495PRO HDR, ATV 495X HDR and ATV 495MAX)

1. Open the USB Burning Tool and load up the firmware img file you want to flash

2.  Pressing down on the Power button insert the USB cable into your PC and it should  pair up, you can release the Power button once it does

3.  Press Start and it should start flashing

4.  Plug in the power adapter

5.  Flashing should take about 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 minutes depending on the firmware version you are flashing

6.  Once it shows "100% Successfully Burning" Press Stop and unplug the USB cable

7.  Next unplug the power adapter, wait 5 seconds and plug it back again to reboot the box

8. The box should reboot and start installing the new firmware,  do not unplug power adapter at this point and wait around 6 minutes before it finishes installing
