New lease on life for myGica 582 with Kodi 17.6

Justin, you or the other admins are welcome to move this post to the OpenElec discussion, however I think many 582 users may benefit by it as many may not even look at that discussion group or unaware of this  option/alternative.

The past couple of months I've gotten increasingly frustrated with a proper Kodi solution on the 582, all of the "Krypton" forks have shortcomings, some have serious bugs and are unstable, abends without logs etc. Last week I was on the verge of buying a new 1900.  Although I've had apps such as VLC, Ace Player etc. on the 582, I never used it as it lacks many features compared to the desktop/laptop versions. I primarily use an IPTV service via Kodi as well as either direct streaming via other addons or via SMB from my desktop pc. I also have a Rasberry Pi 2 with OSMC that is in our bedroom and it works very well with Kodi 17.5 (I don't think the OSMC 17.6 update is out yet)...... this then started to beg the question is there not a similar solution for the myGica?

Under the Openelec KODI Linux Entertainment Center / ATV 582/380 / Discussions is the post Latest OpenELEC from September 16, 2016. This allows one to install the LibreELEC Kodi 17.0 version. Still not satisfied, I started looking further on other forums and got to the point where I am now running LibreELEC 8.1 with Kodi 17.6 on my 582 and it is really humming and running very smooth. No more kick-outs from unstable forks is a great blessing :D.  Addons are running smooth and I have more RAM available for cache which makes a big difference on the 582. From my point of view, depending on one's requirements and usage, this extends the 582's life for another couple of years. I can still use my VPN service as before, Real-Debrid works well as well as streaming via SMB.  It also runs 265/HEVC streams very well which was near impossible on Kit Kat

If there are people interested, I can either do a write-up following on this post or the OpenELEC discussion group. Also I'm not going to "advertise" or flog any Kodi addons here, if people are interested they can pm me. What I can say is that I'm using an IPTV service located 11,000kms from where I live and have very little problems with it, none more than I have had with local satellite tv service I used. Currently my streaming usage is around 200GB average per month via a 20MB ADSL line :D, I live in a rural area and also have to work during the day 9_9

Hi,

I've been trying to follow your hint, but am getting lost in the OpenELEC forums. Somewhere I am not hitting the right posts.

Would you be able to share links / short summary of what you did?

Am keen to stabilise Kodi and comparing Kodi on laptop versus MyGica is threatening to shorted MyGica's life-expectancy... :)

Thank you

I would also be very interested in a link for LibreELEC 8.1. I managed to get 8.0.1a working using this method -

Can't for the life of me find a newer version which works.

Since spottedcat did not go into much detail, I decided to research this myself. Was looking to add decent h.265 video playback.

First step is to download and install OpenElec Kodi 15.2. Details here http://mygicasupport.com/index.php?/topic/2249-atv-582380-unofficial-openelec-kodi-152-021816/

The how to video link is dead, but can use this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4sqhYoWgH4 . Only difference is the location of the reset button. ATV582 reset button is at the bottom of the unit.

Only once this is done, can you upgrade to latest LibreElec (I could not find version 8.1, so I just went with the latest version 8.2.3). For the upgrade, follow the instructions from lparker's post in this thread: http://mygicasupport.com/index.php?/topic/2698-latest-openelec/ .

I downloaded LibreELEC-S8X2.arm-8.2.3-MXIII-1G.tar and installed it. Also copied the remote.conf file.

I only tested the device for a short while. Boot up time is slow. About 6 minutes.  I did not install any add-ons. I can confirm that the h.265 video playback is much better. A few of my 1080P h.265 files still stuttered, but the majority played fine.
