What is XBMC for and how do we utilize it?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the XBMC, that is loaded on our new ATV 1200 unit, actually for? When I open the app, I see that it has something to do with movies, TV shows, music etc., but there are no files/titles shown there. I was able to change the 'skin' default, but other than that, any other features or functions, within the app, don't do anything or lead anywhere...except that it always freezes up our remote controller and/or the XBMC app. This is one of the many dead-ends, frustrations and disappointments that we've been experiencing with the MyGica ATV 1200, it's remote controller and keyboard. I'm really getting tired of hearing my son say "see, we should have got Apple TV". Can anyone suggest a website, link, download, whatever...that could explain how to use XBMC, or better yet, problem solve some of the many glitches we're experiencing?

This site will teach you all you need to know. You have to read/learn, then you can run kodi/xbmc on any box or computer app.

Also YouTube has many tutorials.
