Updating to latest version of Kodi.

Is it possible to update The Kodi app on the ATV586 to the latest stable release? O would it be necessary to have Root to get it to operate correctly?

I'm having some issues with part of the music being lost on playback with no loss files and I would like to see if the newer versions correct the issue.
