Power button does nothing?

I've had the 582 box for a couple months now, all in all its a nice little device. Ive been avoiding the remote the whole time because it doesn't seem to work right.. it has a power button, and the settings have a cec control setting, but it does nothing.. I have been using a harmony which is a whole other can of worms with kodi, but why doesn't the power button work. Ideally I just want the tv to turn off...

sooooo... I kept reading and realized something. the way the device was sitting the power bitton uses ir instead and that wasnt line of sight. im an idiot.

any ideas on the cec funcionality though? just looking for it to turn off my lg tv with simplink and back on when i use it. Doesnt seem to be passing through to the tv.
