Update weirdness

So I returned home and flicked on the TV to see an update notification for my MyGica...So I hit yes it restarted and went till the end (I guess) and then was stuck and froze. So, I unplugged it. Plugged it back in, works, not sure what the update was? Have 4.4.2 still

I have an update weirdness, too, but a different one

Went to manually check for updates, and got "connect service fail" (in those exact words).

Edit: after about 30 tries, it finally downloaded the mini-update, then it took about 50 tries to finally connect and get the new big update. I can't figure out where the update is coming from, since I have a somewhat convoluted system of hosting an ad-hoc through my desktop computer, which has a billion connections on its own, but the average speed sent to my wi-fi is about 300 kbps, let's say 25 KB/s. At this rate, it will take 6 hours for the update image to download. This also explains "connect service fail" - is the update server hosted on someone's dial-up in China?!
